Lead with Integrity: Growth Happens in the Peaks and the Valleys

Ethics Matters

Q2 2026

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” — Often attributed to Winston Churchill.

We all enjoy the peaks. Those moments when our hard work pays off, our goals are achieved, and success feels within our reach. These experiences build confidence and remind us of what is possible.

However, true growth often happens in the valleys. In other words, in the midst of challenges and uncertainty, we find ways to leverage our skills, resources, and grit to not just survive, but to thrive.

This year’s StudentCPT Leadership Conference theme, “Through the Peaks and Valleys: You Must Appreciate the Peaks and Navigate the Valleys to Grow,” highlights an important lesson for aspiring leaders. Success and setbacks are both essential parts of the journey.

The peaks teach us what we can accomplish. The valleys teach us resilience, humility and character.

Challenges, disappointments and difficult decisions test our values and reveal who we are. They provide opportunities to practice integrity when the right choice isn’t always the easiest one. In many ways, the valleys are where ethical leadership is developed.

At the NASBA Center for the Public Trust, we believe leadership is not defined by avoiding obstacles but by how we respond to them. Ethical leaders celebrate success without becoming complacent and face adversity without compromising their values.

For students and emerging professionals, the message is simple. Embrace both the victories and the challenges. Learn from each experience, stay grounded in your values, and trust that every peak and every valley is preparing you for the leader you are becoming.

Appreciate the peaks. Navigate the valleys. Grow through both.
