Leadership Column: How Is Your Morning?

Ethics Matters

Q2 2024

Many effective leaders begin their days before the rest of the world. They wake up very early. They invest in themselves before the workday begins. They plan and organize. How is your morning?

For many busy leaders, their days are filled with meetings, coaching others, group problem-solving, receiving and making phone calls, responding to emails and other tasks that fill their days. Therefore, to optimize their days, they wake up at 5 A.M. or even earlier to facilitate a productive day. Taking advantage of the quiet time while others are asleep, these leaders make valuable use of their time and consider it personal and sacred.

Personal development is usually the theme of this time. For me, it is the time I use to read or to study something spiritual. I use it to exercise. I also use it to read or to listen to inspirational messages. Others use their time to allow their creativity to come out through writing or other artistic expressions.

Another common use for this time is planning and strategizing. Whether it is daily planning of logistics, strategic planning for the year or personal planning, the quiet morning hours are perfect for planning. Many times, my best ideas come to me in the early morning.

My mornings are busy and productive but curated for and by me. How is your morning?
