Good News – On the Road to Fewer Carbon Emissions

Ethics Matters

Q4 2024

Recently published on the Good News Network, U.S. firm Carbon Upcycling Technologies, in collaboration with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has successfully completed a three-year study on the use of the company’s low-carbon cement in highways.

The entities paved a section of a Minnesota road with an experimental low-carbon concrete mixture that resulted in greater strength, less cement and less carbon use. Cement is one of the most carbon-intensive industries on Earth due to its heavy usage in construction. This finding demonstrates that carbon-intensive cement in concrete can be reduced whilst making roads stronger. The study, sponsored by the National Road Research Alliance (NRRA), aimed to identify materials that could lower the carbon footprint of concrete paving without compromising strength.

The NRRA thoroughly tested 16 unique concrete mixtures in real-world conditions on an active Minnesota highway to recognize options that would reduce the carbon footprint of groundwork without sacrificing strength or durability. When looking for ways to care for our world, this is good news indeed.
