Ethics Matters

Q4 2023

The NASBA Center for the Public Trust (CPT) “Cuffed for a Cause” fundraiser resulted in record success. Held on October 30 during NASBA’s 116th Annual Meeting in New York, NY, the event yielded proceeds exceeding $55,000, marking the campaign as one of the biggest in CPT history.  As part of the ‘cuffed’ concept, 10 of NASBA’s ethical leaders were taken into custody, handcuffed and placed in the “CPT Jail” for fabricated ethical violations and could only be released after reaching their $2,000 donation goal.

After viewing the magnitude of generosity in the amount of donations coming in from our participants, Alfonzo Alexander, CPT President, challenged the 10 ethical leaders with new individual donation goals. The challenge was certainly accepted!  Alexander led the challenge bringing in over $10,000 in donations and was followed by Donny Burkett, CPT Board Chair, with over $8,000 and NASBA Chair Stephanie Saunders, with $5,500 in donations.

This is not the first year the CPT utilized this theme for its fundraiser. In 2014, the “Cuffed for a Cause” campaign brought in over $32,000 in donations. Adding to the excitement of the fundraiser, a silent auction was held for ‘The Ultimate New Year’s Eve Times Square Party,’ which included a two-night stay at the New York Marriott Marquis, a VIP reception with the General Manager and a VIP escorted walk to the Times Square celebration. Former NASBA Chair Janice Gray was the winner of the silent auction. She is looking forward to ringing in 2024 in Times Square!

CPT supporters in attendance also received a chance to win a series of prizes including two-night stays in Savannah, GA, Clearwater Beach, FL, and Downtown Kansas City, MO, as well as two tickets to the 2023-24 NCAA Basketball Men’s Final Four in Phoenix, AZ.

The CPT would like to thank everyone that contributed to making the 2023 “Cuffed for a Cause” fundraiser a tremendous success! The support and donations received propelled The CPT beyond the projected fundraising goal and made organization history.
