How to Fit in At Your First Internship

Starting your first internship can be intimidating. It could be the first time you’ve worked in a professional setting like an office, and you might be nervous about how to present yourself. Here are a few tips on how to impress everyone around the office to help calm those nerves, and make a positive first impression!

  • Ask about the dress code.

One of the most important factors in presenting yourself properly in a work setting is dressing appropriately. Be sure to ask your manager or supervisor what the dress code is well in advance of your first day. This will not only help you fit in with your colleagues, but it will take a lot of stress and insecurity off your shoulders knowing that you look the part.

  • Keep yourself updated on company news.

Being educated about the company you work for goes a long way. Before you start the internship, research the company, news, employees and more to stay abreast of important news and information. LinkedIn is a great resource for learning who’s who at a company. Imagine how impressed your colleagues will be when you know your stuff on your first day! This demonstrates that you care about your role and the company. You’ll also be able to thoughtfully contribute to conversations.

  • Ask questions.

Since you are an intern, everyone understands that you are there to learn. Asking questions is the fastest way to learn, and it shows that you are thinking critically about your role and want to improve. Don’t be afraid to ask your colleagues for help – they’ll appreciate your curiosity and drive to perform your role correctly. It’ll also help you stay on the same page as your colleagues.

  • Get to know the work culture.

Understanding the work culture at your organization will help you bond with your colleagues and make you feel like a part of the team. Small things like noting their meeting etiquette and knowing who to go to for what will help loop you in with the rest of the team. If everyone typically shows up for meetings 10 minutes early and takes notes during discussion while you show up only five minutes early and come to the meeting without paper or pencil, you may not be taken seriously and  may feel isolated. Take note of the culture and apply it to your behavior!

  • Be yourself.

Remember that you were hired as an intern for a reason. The company thought you would be a great fit! Being yourself is one of the best ways to fit in with your colleagues. You will be able to create genuine and meaningful connections that could last throughout your career. If you remain professional and remember your strengths, your colleagues will appreciate your individuality.
